Table Lamps

A table lamp is judged from a seated position, which is the one thing almost nobody checks before buying.

Standing up, the proportions look fine. Sit down on the sofa or in bed and a lamp that is slightly too tall puts the bulb directly in your eyeline. The rule worth remembering is that the bottom of the shade should sit around eye level when you are seated, roughly 60 to 65cm above the surface it stands on. For a bedside lamp, measure from the top of the nightstand, not the floor.

Width matters almost as much. A lamp should not overhang the table it sits on, and on a narrow nightstand that usually rules out anything with a wide shade, however good it looks in a photograph.
